Part-time Children’s Theatre Class and Youth Theatre Class

Alex Arts Academy is back again for its third instalment of the annual showcase through its part-time programme which is made up of two classes; Children’s Theatre Class and Youth Theatre Class respectively.

The annual showcase and graduations serve to mark and celebrate the year-long, educative and creative part-time programme of the school through captivating performances by our artistically gifted students, who are dedicated to growing their craft in the art sector.

The students also use this moment to share their journey with their parents through artistic expression: The theatre productions display an array of art forms including dance, poetry, music, acting, comedy, mime and movements. The performances also serve as a platform for the Academy to evaluate its educational programme and the kind of artists it produces and the relevance of their work through their performances.

As such, the Academy gathers the community on an annual basis. This takes place in a communal space remincent of old days when people would gather around the fire and listen to stories. In our case, however, we will gather in our makeshift theatre to allow the community of Alex Arts Academy and the community at large to witness the journey through different and dynamic theatrical productions from our students.

We are thrilled to be presenting plays facilitated by our phenomenal team of educators; Matlakala Motaung, Archie Matsetela, Sipho Fitzgerald Manganyi, Mpho Masilela, Sanele Mzimela, Masiza Mbali and Avril Mkansi. These qualified, experienced and award-winning artists and facilitators have worked with their students to put together productions which are centred on challenges affecting the children, youth and society at large. These productions mirrors societal dreams, failures and hopes through the students’ eyes, under their teachers’ guidance.

The annual showcase will be taking place over two days, with the Children’s Theatre Class taking place on the 4th of December 2021, at 10am and the Youth Theatre Class performances on the 11th of December, 10am respectively. At Alex Arts Academy, Selaelo Maredi Theatre venue.

For the first in the three years of presenting the showcases, the Academy has split the showcase from the usual one-day event where all classes perform into a two-day event; to allow each class/programme to excel and shine. This is also done to recognise their different and separate journeys in the programme with different curriculums for both classes.

Over and above the emphasis of this event is to celebrate the students for each milestone they reach in their performance training in their respective classes which are tailored for the two groups.

“The Academy has grown over the years in its educational offerings, events, festivals and performances. With these performances we are showcasing the growth of our programme beyond the classroom, with all its nuances that are complemented with excursions, festivals, guest workshops and strategic partnerships, I am looking forward to the magic that will be presented on stage,” alludes Moses D. Rasekele, Managing Director of the Alex Arts Academy.

In the 2021 calendar we worked with the University of the Witwatersrand, University of Johannesburg, University of Pretoria, and Stellenbosch University. We also worked with Keep the Dream Arts and National Poet Laureate Hub.
